Microsoft has restructured their developer certification track, splitting it into two tiers—MCAD (Microsoft Certified Applications Developer) and MCSD (Microsoft Certified Solution Developer). The MCAD validates skills related to developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining individual applications, while the MCSD validates skills related to analyzing and designing complex enterprise application. MCAD candidates must pass 3 exams (2 core and 1 elective), while MCSD candidates must pass 5 exams (4 core and 1 elective). Currently there are parallel exams for both Visual Basic and C#.
