Review for Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince by (Harison) (Korea), 23 November 2005 17:32

Feeling disappointed after reading ¡®Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix¡¯, I have decided to not read Harry potter any further. I felt it was far too long and seemed that Rowling has created some kind of wild goose chase. Anyway, my sister read ¡®Half-Blood Prince¡¯ first and told me that I would find the story shocking. With some help of boredom and natural curiosity, I had to find the source of the shocking story in the new Harry Potter book, so I grabbed the book from the self and started reading it.

The death of Sirius Black, in ¡®Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix¡¯, was a shock to me since he was my favorite character. However, in ¡®Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince¡¯, Harry seem to have recovered from it very quickly. He appears to be reasonably happy as long as no one talks to him about death of his godfather. Referring back to ¡®Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix¡¯, Harry was constantly grumpy and miserable. Therefore it was frustrating to read the book but in the new book I found none of the similar problem. As Harry begins his life in Hogwarts for the sixth year, he gets the privilege of learning about Voldemort¡¯s teenage hood from Albus Dumbledore. I found this part of the book is very interesting and Rowling has created the past life of Lord Voldemort in an outstandingly convincing way. Also the fact that Dumbledore is gathering information about Voldemort means that he is preparing to fight against Voldemort, hence creating flow of the book.

During his portions class, Harry finds himself a new best friend called ¡®Half-Blood Prince¡¯. Ever since the beginning of the new year, this mysterious character has helped Harry (and Ron) with their homework and provided him with various amazing magic spells. Sudden appearance of this new character provides some suspense for the book and makes the book irresistibly gripping. The all perfect Hermione Granger is not the top student in one of her class and she makes irrational decision in order to avenge Ron. This kind of change in behavior of major character provides different perspective into the character and makes the book far more intriguing.

Quidditch seems to be one of many highlights of Harry Potter books, however, in the new one there does not seem to be much about Quidditch. In the other hand, there are far more important matter to deal with, such as the rise of Lord Voldemort and the Prophecy. Whilst mentioning that topic, the sixth book also mentions the Prophecy, as it would be quite obvious to most readers. However, it has been a while since the release of the fifth book and I found myself not having clear knowledge of the Prophecy. Rowling could have briefly mentioned about the Prophecy, in order to prevent this, but mentioning the Prophecy in the new book could have made the book too long. Finally, since there are so many Harry Potter books, I found myself having trouble with some magical terms mentions in previous books and some readers may have struggled to read the book. Some readers may have read previous books before reading the new one to solve this problem but I doubt that many readers did this.

To conclude, I must say that ¡®Harry Potter and Half-Blood Prince¡¯ is a reasonably good book. I prefer reading before I go to bed, tucked cozily in my blanket. One night I stayed up till 4 O¡¯clock in the morning reading this book, I must say that I only went to sleep because I finished the book. It is certainly extremely entertaining book that could be enjoyed both by children and adults and it is hard to find books that could be enjoyed by both audience.  [Delete review]
