Fantastic by miri lara (United States), 26 November 2004 23:20
This is a well developed language self-learning book and it is adaptable to any kind of learner. Each unit is composed of two lessons and each lesson is divided into three parts: conversation, vocabulary, and grammar. The conversation is written in Korean script as well as the Romanized version and you can listen to the conversation in the CDs. You learn not only to listen and read, but also to understand the new alphabet. After reading the conversation you can proceed to the vocabulary section. First you will find the expressions used in the conversation, with the appropriate meaning and not the direct translation so that you learn how the expressions are used. After that you will find the vocabulary section, where each new word has three components: the Korean script, the Romanized version, and the translation. You can review each word and then proceed to the grammar section. In this section you will find clear descriptions of the grammar used during the dialogue. Grammar not applicable to the lesson is not discussed. In this way the book allows the student to remain focused on the lesson instead of getting overwhelmed by learning too many rules and too many words.  After each unit there is a variety of exercises that highlight the vocabulary and grammar learned in the unit and build on the previous lessons. Each unit grown from the previous unit and thus the student’s level of fluency develops. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning Korean. I have already lent it to three of my friends who were surprised by how well-developed this self-learning program is and the results are worth it.  [Delete review]
My First Korean Language Book by Joe McPherson (Korea), 01 September 2006 07:15
I bought this book soon before coming to Korea.  I knew I had a good book when the second chapter taught how to order a beer.

The downside of this book is that it relies too much on its own Romanized spellings of Korean words.  The Romanizations are not even the official standard.  So it's not a good book for learning to read Korean script and also not good for learning to read Korean in the Roman alphabet.  [Delete review]
